Abhishek Sharma player profile
A clean striker, Abhishek Sharma started in the middle order with a solid game against pace and spin, but made a smooth transition in the top three for Punjab in domestic cricket and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. He is also a handy left-arm spinner who can surprise the batters with his back spinning legcutter.
He made a name for himself in age-group cricket in the Vijay Merchant Domestic Under-16 Tournament in 2015-16 (he scored an impressive 1200 runs in seven matches) and the following season as the first-highest run-scorer. Captained India when they won the U-19 Asia Cup title. He was an integral part of India’s U-19 World Cup winning team in 2018, scoring 50 runs and taking 2 for 11 against Bangladesh in the quarter-final.
Delhi Daredevils picked him up in the 2018 auction and he scored a 19-ball 46 in his first IPL game, but the momentum faltered in the following few seasons. In 2022, his fourth season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Abhishek, now established in the top order, scored 426 runs at a strike rate of 133. Most memorably, he scored 34 off Rashid Khan’s 15 balls against eventual champions Gujarat Titans.
A year later, he scored 485 runs, 180-plus with two centuries and three half-centuries, as Punjab won their first Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. Earlier in the tournament, he scored 112 off 51 balls against Andhra Pradesh to guide Punjab to 275 for 6, a tournament record.
In the 2024 IPL he scored 63 off 23 balls to help Sunrisers post 277 for 3, the highest score in IPL history.
However, Abhishek is not the only limited overs prospect. On his Ranji Trophy debut in 2017, he scored 94 runs from number 8 and in December 2022 he scored his maiden first-class century in a draw against Chandigarh.
